You wake up in a jail cell on the other side of the world. |
You get one phone call. Who do you call? |
Stop and really think about this for a second. Not your mum (she'll panic). Not your best mate (he'll laugh). Not your partner (they'll cry). |
You need someone who will DROP EVERYTHING and figure out how to get you out. Someone who won't accept "impossible" as an answer. Someone who sees problems as puzzles to solve, not walls to stop them. |
That person you just thought of? They have high agency. |
And it might be the single most important trait you can develop if you want your dream to become reality. |
Most people are waiting for someone else to give them permission to start. Waiting for the perfect moment. Waiting for more money, more time, more confidence, more knowledge. |
High agency people don't wait. They start with what they have and figure it out as they go. |
When everyone else hears "that's impossible," high agency people hear "nobody's figured it out yet." |
When the Wright brothers decided humans should fly, the New York Times had literally published a headline saying "Man won't fly for a million years." |
Did Wilbur and Orville care? Not one bit. They were too busy building gliders in their garage and teaching themselves aerodynamics from library books. |
Four months after that newspaper headline, they were airborne. |
Every entrepreneur who's built something meaningful has this trait. They don't ask for permission. They don't wait for perfect conditions. They definitely don't take "no" for an answer. |
But you weren't born this way. |
Watch any toddler for five minutes. They climb everything, build towers that defy gravity, and turn cardboard boxes into spaceships. Pure, undiluted agency. |
Then we go to school. "Raise your hand. Follow the rules. Don't colour outside the lines." We learn to wait for instructions. To seek permission. To play it safe. |
Your current self is fighting to keep you exactly where you are. Because change means the old you has to die. |
So how do you reclaim your agency? |
Start by changing the question you ask yourself. |
Instead of "Why is this happening to me?" ask "What can I do about this?" |
Instead of "I can't do that because..." ask "How could I make this work?" |
Instead of "Someone should fix this" ask "How do I fix this?" |
That shift in language rewires your brain. You stop being a victim of circumstances and start being the author of your story. |
Take action before you feel ready. High agency people have a bias for action over analysis. They test ideas in the real world instead of perfecting them in their heads. |
Question everything you've been told is "just how things work." Most rules are just suggestions that nobody's bothered to challenge. |
And when someone tells you something is impossible, remember: they're probably right... for them. |
But impossible is just another word for "hasn't been done yet." |
Your dream isn't going to build itself. The world isn't going to magically arrange perfect conditions for you to start. |
You have two choices: happen to life, or let life happen to you. |
Which person would you call from that jail cell? |
More importantly - would someone call YOU? |
