The Creator Apologised For Inventing This..

This “annoying” tactic changed digital marketing forever—and its creator apologized for it.

Pop-ups are now a staple, but in the 90s, they were revolutionary. The first one appeared on a site you’d never expect… and it worked too well.

Discover the wild story behind pop-ups—and why they’re still effective today…

See the Origin Story here...

1996: The Year Pop-Up Ads Broke the Internet

Popup Ads were created by Ethan Zuckerman for use on Tripod.com, (a site for college students).

His original idea was to simply separate ads from content... to make the ads LESS distracting!

For better or worse, depending on your perspective, they worked far too well with early click-through rates hitting 78% (compared to today's 1-3$ CTRs).

No surprise, they went viral as every site used them and every advertiser demanded similar exposure...

And website users came to loathe them!

And Ethan apologised for ever creating them.

These days popups are lightweight and flexible. This allows website owners to be much more nuanced with delivery... using popups to add value rather than simply annoying & interrupting users.

Exit-intent pop-ups now convert up to 10% or more, when offering real value (e.g., discounts, lead magnets) at the right time.

Lesson: Even “hated” tactics work if used to benefit the user and timed right!

I still hate pop ups, and I expect you do too.
