These guys were testing headlines for a SaaS company's free trial sign-up page. The original headline was a standard feature-focused line. It was clear but not particularly compelling. The hypothesis was that by shifting the focus from what the software is to what the user can become, they could trigger a stronger emotional connection.

The test involved changing just a single keyword.

The result was not a minor fluctuation; it was a statistically significant 18% lift in free trial sign-ups, which directly translated into more potential customers.

At first glance, tis really wasn't a major change to the wording, but the "Become" headline increased free trial sign-ups by 18%.

Why It Worked:

Aspirational Identity: The word "Become" taps into the user's aspiration. It's not about using software; it's about transforming into a more successful version of themselves.

Benefit-Oriented: "Organized, Professional" are direct benefits and outcomes that the user deeply desires. The original headline's "All-in-One" is a feature that the user has to translate into a benefit themselves.

Emotional Trigger: It connects with the frustration of feeling disorganized and unprofessional and promises a clear path to the solution.

How to Apply This:

Look at your key headlines (on your homepage, landing pages, ads). Are they describing your product, or are they describing your customer's future success?

Try reframing them using power words like "Become," "Discover," "Unlock," or "Transform."

These days my inbox is constantly filled with offers of the latest-greatest must-have AI tool for marketers. Every one promises to do more than the last,  and most of the one's I've actually bought have fallen short.

Forget the hype. Here are 5 practical tools you can use today.

  1. Headline/Email Subject Line Generator: Jasper's Free Templates (formerly Jarvis). While Jasper is paid, they offer several free templates on their site. Use the "Blog Post Topic Ideas" and "Email Subject Lines" templates. How to use it: Paste your basic idea in and generate 10-20 options. It won't give you the perfect headline, but it will break your mental block and give you a starting point to refine.

  2. Grammar and Tone Checker: Grammarly Free. This goes beyond spelling. It catches hard-to-spot mistakes and suggests improvements for clarity and conciseness. How to use it: Install the browser extension. It will check your emails, social posts, and content in Google Docs, ensuring you always look professional.

  3. Social Media Post Repurposer: TweetHunter's Free AI Hook Generator. This tool is fantastic for turning a key idea from your blog post into a engaging Twitter thread hook. How to use it: Type in the main concept of your article (e.g., "loss aversion in marketing") and it will output numerous engaging hooks to build a thread around.

  4. Video Caption Generator: CapCut's Free Auto Captions. Video content is king, but 85% of social video is watched on mute. How to use it: Upload your short video clip to CapCut's online editor, click "Auto Captions," and it will generate accurate, synced captions in minutes. You can then edit the text and customize the font and style.

  5. Image Generator for Blog Graphics: Canva's Text to Image App. Need a unique, royalty-free image for your blog post?
